The Jewels of London

One summer when my family and I were visiting in Manchester, England to see my grandmother we decided that we would travel down to London and see my sister who had been living their for the past six months in ‘Crystal Palace’. We stayed in London for three days.

On our first day, we went and saw Westminster Abbey, formally titled Church of St Peter at Westminster. It’s is one of the most notable religious buildings and traditional places for coronations and burials of British Kings and Queens. When one goes to visit the Abbey, one can pick from either taking a highly popular verger- led tour or free audio guides which are translated into eleven languages. In my opinion, I really liked visiting Westminster because I’m a history buff and seeing all the old Kings and Queens along with famous poets in British history was really interesting.

When my family and I went we had visited London a year after William and Kate’s wedding and seeing how long she had to walk down the aisle to get to the alter was unbelievable. Also, there is a little store across the street where one can get a momentum of the visit at Westminster Abbey.

Later,, we went to see the London eye, which is a giant Ferris wheel and was the world largest wheel in 1999, but has been since surpassed by others. When visiting the London Eye, I recommend going in the morning to visit before the line gets really crazy. It gives a spectacular view of the city. Also, if you go London Bridge you can get a great shot of the London Eye, Parliament and Big Ben in one picture. After the London eye we went and visited the Palace of Westminster and got some great exterior shots of the famous attraction. Shortly after went to take a picture of 10 Downing Street though there isn’t much to see because it’s blocked off. There is a sign that many visitors take a picture of to mark the occasion.

The next day, we went to Harrods, which is the world’s most famous department store. Though it is the most famous it can be quite expensive but their can sometimes be great ‘sales’ there. Also, it’s fun to try on really fancy clothing because for most people it’s not an everyday occurrence. After spending a couple of hours at Harrods’s we made our way to Buckingham Palace, which is extremely busy but if you stay long enough you can see the changing of the guard, which is always fascinating to watch. We didn’t go inside Buckingham Palace because the tours were unavailable that day but the experience of knowing that past, present and future royals have entered into the gates and live there is just as great.

On our last day we went to Crystal Palace Park and spent the afternoon walking around the park and had a picnic. There is a section of the park that they turned into a dinosaur park where there are a series of sculptors of Dinosaurs and other extinct animals. Also, there is a maze in the Park, which is the largest in the country and has had visitors come and visit since the 1870s. Most people find it to be an excellent diversion that gives a good laugh but beware you might find yourself occupied for longer then planned.
